An Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo has sentenced Mr. Tunde Kayode Oshin to 10 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of criminal offences.
The judgment, delivered on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, by Justice Adebayo Oni, marked the conclusion of the criminal trial, during which the prosecution presented evidence against the defendant. After reviewing the evidence and submissions of counsel, the court found Mr. Oshin guilty and imposed a custodial sentence of ten years.
Justice Oni held that the sentence was in accordance with the applicable laws and reflected the gravity of the offences established before the court. The judge further ordered that the convict be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service to commence serving his prison term immediately.
Court proceedings attracted the attention of lawyers, court officials, security personnel, and members of the public, who were present as the judgment was delivered. The sentencing brought to an end months of legal proceedings that culminated in the conviction of the defendant.
Following the judgment, officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service took custody of Mr. Oshin and processed him into the correctional system in compliance with the court’s order. Under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, convicted inmates are committed to correctional facilities not only to serve their custodial sentences but also to participate in rehabilitation, vocational training, educational programmes, counselling, and other reformation initiatives designed to facilitate their reintegration into society upon completion of their sentences.
Legal observers noted that every person convicted by a court of law retains the constitutional right to challenge the judgment through the appellate courts within the time prescribed by law. Unless set aside by a higher court, however, the judgment of the High Court remains valid and enforceable.
The sentencing of Mr. Tunde Kayode Oshin underscores the judiciary’s commitment to enforcing the rule of law and ensuring that persons found guilty of criminal offences are held accountable in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
As of the time of the judgment, Mr. Oshin was committed to the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service to begin serving his 10-year custodial sentence as ordered by the court.
