Tinubu’s Intervention on Osun Account Freeze Reflects Courageous Democratic Leadership – Dr. Olusola Ojo

ADO-EKITI – An Ekiti-born public policy analyst, Dr. Olusola John Ojo, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for directing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately vacate the court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, describing the decision as “a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a demonstration of responsible, courageous and statesmanlike leadership.”

In a statement issued on Friday, Dr. Ojo said the President’s intervention has reinforced public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions and sent a strong message that no election should be conducted under circumstances capable of creating the perception of undue federal influence.

According to him, President Tinubu’s public explanation showed uncommon transparency, constitutional maturity and a deep appreciation of the delicate balance between strengthening anti-corruption institutions and preserving the integrity of the country’s electoral process.

He noted that although the President reiterated his long-standing policy of allowing institutions such as the EFCC to discharge their constitutional responsibilities independently, he equally acknowledged that the timing of the Commission’s action coming just days before the Osun State governorship election—could undermine public confidence and raise avoidable political concerns.

“President Tinubu has once again demonstrated that democratic leadership is not merely about exercising constitutional powers but about exercising sound judgment in the overall national interest. His directive was not a repudiation of the EFCC’s constitutional mandate; rather, it was a carefully considered intervention to ensure that no action of government, however lawful, is capable of casting a shadow over the credibility of an election,” he said.

Dr. Ojo observed that one of the greatest strengths of every democracy is the confidence citizens have in the neutrality of state institutions, adding that the President’s decision has reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to providing a level playing field for all political parties and contestants.

While acknowledging the EFCC’s explanation that it acted on intelligence relating to the alleged movement of about ₦11 billion belonging to the Osun State Government and that investigations into the matter had commenced months earlier, Dr. Ojo said the anti-graft agency was right to protect public resources but stressed that timing remains a critical component of public administration.

He explained that institutions may possess unquestionable legal authority to act, but democratic governance also requires wisdom, restraint and sensitivity, particularly when such actions coincide with major electoral activities capable of generating political controversy.

“The President has not stopped the EFCC from carrying out its statutory responsibilities. Investigations can continue within the ambit of the law. What he has done is to ensure that Nigerians, election observers and the international community are left in no doubt that the forthcoming Osun governorship election will not be overshadowed by allegations that federal institutions are being deployed to influence the democratic process,” he stated.

The policy analyst further described the President’s decision as a significant boost to Nigeria’s democratic credentials at a time when the country continues to attract the attention of regional and global stakeholders regarding electoral governance and institutional accountability.

He said the action demonstrates that the Tinubu administration appreciates that the credibility of elections is measured not only by the conduct of voting but also by the neutrality, fairness and transparency displayed by every institution of government before, during and after the polls.

Dr. Ojo maintained that President Tinubu’s intervention would strengthen public trust, reduce political tension and further reassure domestic and international observers of the administration’s commitment to constitutional democracy, the rule of law and credible elections.

He therefore urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations and all stakeholders to ensure that the Osun governorship election is peaceful, transparent and reflects the freely expressed will of the electorate.

According to him, history will judge leaders not merely by the powers they possess but by the wisdom with which they exercise those powers.

He added, “President Tinubu has demonstrated that while institutions must remain independent, democratic leadership also requires vigilance in ensuring that institutional actions do not inadvertently diminish public confidence in the electoral process. This singular action has further strengthened Nigeria’s democratic image before the international community.”

Dr. Ojo called on all contestants in the election to embrace peace, respect the rule of law and accept the outcome of a free, fair and credible electoral process, insisting that the unity, stability and democratic progress of Nigeria must remain paramount above partisan interests.
